Highlights From the Interview

Matt: If you don’t know who you are, if you don’t know yourself, it’s going to be difficult to lead others. So we use personality profile data to help entrepreneurs scale their business.

Human beings are your greatest leading indicator of P&L performance. If we’re not taking advantage of psychometrics to help scale the business, we’re leaving a lot of money on the table. It’s about hiring, but it’s even more so about a bump in productivity from your current team.

Bill: When do I really care about the quality of the person I’m hiring? It’s when we’re under pressure and we have to perform. A lot of times a person can hide their personality until stress comes.  

Matt: When we talk about a personality, you’ve got your traits that are inherent in you. Most experts say that your personality is fully developed by the age of 12. There are seven work related traits we measure with the Culture Index. Those seven traits will determine who a person is and what they will do in their role with your business. These traits are most evident in two situations: when a person is under stress, and when a person is at home.

Bill: Understanding an employee’s personality is not just about getting maximum productivity. It’s also about making people feel like they are a part of the team and that they love what they do.

I really want to be in my world, where I am fueled up instead of drained out when I go to work.

Now that we’ve implemented this program, and we’ve hired people this way and we’ve managed them this way, employees come to me and say, “You know, I’ve never had a boss who has ever actually cared what I thought or cared about my quality of life at work.”

In fact, I’ve let some people go and received a message from them six months later saying, “Thank you. I found what I really loved doing.”

Matt: There are a lot of us as entrepreneurs who live life figuring it out on our own. We naturally assume that other people can do that as well. Then we put them in roles that require them to be autonomous when they’ve always been told what to do. We’re making their life really hard.
